Coastal Reforestation for the largest lagoon in Taiwan
The biggest lagoon in Taiwan locates in Taijiang National Park. Owing to the rather stable living environment compared to Taiwan Strait, Qigu lagoon provides the habitat for over 200 species of marine creatures and migratory birds. 3 of the species are classified as “CR“, 4 classified as “EN“, and 12 classified as “VU“ by IUCN. Rhizophora stylosa, the precoius specie of mangrove can also be seen in the area. Moreover, 60% of the population of endangered species “Black-faced spoonbill“ migrates to the Qigu lagoon and the nearby fish farming ponds in winter. Local fishermen made use of this natural resource to farm fish and oysters, giving rise to a unique aquaculture industry.
